The Revelation and the ArtPrize!

I'm delighted to announce, the painting that took me a full year to paint has been invited to exhibit at the International Art Competition known as The ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan, September 12 to October 3.
Of all the hosting venues around the entire city participating in this great event, the venue from which I hoped to receive an invitation, certainly the largest, is the beautiful DeVos Place Convention Center. Today I received the DeVos invitation, so that is exactly where Revelation will be hanging... all 12 x 4 feet of it!
The ArtPrize Exhibition takes place every year, and it is best known because of its huge monetary awards. This year the top award, chosen by the people in attendance, is $100,000. That's quite an award! |

The Revelation of St John painting accepted to exhibit during the ArtPrize is painted on 3 panels to make 1 complete composition, otherwise known as a tryptic. The center panel shows the Apostle John on the island of Patmos where he was sent into exile. He is seated with a dove, having received the letters to the 7 churches, or cities. The Lord stands over him, in the midst of lamps, holding 7 stars. Angels who were instructed to hold back the 4 winds are shown on each panel. Two of them are here. The 2 Witnesses mentioned in the Book of Revelation are at the left, walking into the left panel called The Tribulation panel. |

The Tribulation panel depicts all the frightening things we read about in the Book of Revelation: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse; The angels with trumpets announcing judgements; the woman with a Child protected by God; a Beast from the Ground and a Beast from the Sea; The Dragon with multiple heads and horns that are actually symbols of nations, and the Archangel Michael who fights to subdue it. I decided the story should go from darkness to light, so this panel is at the far left of the painting. |

The third panel at the far right depicts the Heavens. The panel displays the Tree of Life with the 12 fruits that are mentioned, and the 24 elders around the throne with bowls filled with prayers. (Lots of elders!) It also depicts the Lamb, the name of Jesus who is called the Lamb of God. The Throne of God is depicted as glowing light in the heavens.
I really enjoyed painting the creatures with the eyes. The Book of Revelation describes these creatures with different feet: a man, a lion, an eagle, and hooves of a calf. Each creature has eyes to match the type of feet they were given.
