Come to the Museum!

The Feeding of the 5000, 48 x 60

I have just learned that The Feeding of the 5000 has been invited to an exhibition at the beautiful Evansville Museum of Arts and Science in Evansville, Indiana. The Evansville Museum hosted my Last Supper painting four years ago, which was the first time we learned about this gorgeous museum on the Ohio River.

This is the same painting that has been on a Peoria billboard for the past year, so it has become quite popular.

When I created it, I wanted it to reflect what had to be the utter joy and stunned amazement of the disciples who had no idea how to care for the huge crowd that had been listening to Jesus' teaching all day. When the disciples told Jesus to send the crowd home so that they could get something to eat, Jesus said to them, "You give them something to eat." The disciples replied with a brief accounting and declared how much money it would take to feed all these people.

Jesus may even have acknowledged with a nod of his head what it would take to feed them, but the only thing we read in the text is that He answered back telling the disciples to have all the people sit down in groups. The disciples complied and everyone waited for whatever was coming next.

When everyone was seated, Jesus was handed 5 bread loaves and 2 fish. I can imagine the disciples mumbling, "THIS should be interesting," having no idea what He was about to do. But Jesus took the tiny bit of food, broke it and gave thanks, and began putting it into 12 baskets, one for each disciple. Then it kept increasing. And increasing. And increasing. The disciples kept passing out food, and the baskets kept filling up! Once every hungry person was satisfied, the increasing food stopped.

Not only was there enough food for every man, woman and child who was present, but the leftovers were gathered and filled the 12 baskets of each disciple. The feeding was a miracle. The leftovers were a message. It was forgotten by no one, which we know because this miracle is recorded in all 4 Gospel accounts: Matthew 14, Mark 6, Luke 9, and John 6.

If you go to the Evansville Museum, you will see this exhibition in a beautiful Midwest museum along the Ohio river.

We think you will have great time!
