New Exhibit New Paintings

I typically paint large pictures, which can still be seen at the ongoing Jacksonville exhibit called Different Stories Same Script. Because many works are monumental in size, I am accustomed to people going up close to the paintings to examine the vegetation or the animals and tell me how much they enjoy various items in the whole composition. As I am presently getting ready for some new compositions, I decided to do what I like to call "cut-outs", and all of these new "Cut Outs" paintings will be in the Garden Gate Gallery in Mount Dora, Florida,  right next to the famous Lakeside Inn.

I so enjoyed doing these, and had them hanging around the house while they were drying. The last of the new ones I finished for this show was a landscape of the Marina right next to Mount Dora's downtown. This is the first landscape I have actually done in quite a long time, which I realized as I was painting it. Many of you who have followed my work since the early years recall all the paintings I used to do from life. I had forgotten how pleasant it is to just sink into a landscape painting and represent an entire boat with a quick stroke of paint. It was one of the things that fascinated me about painting the first time I ever went to a museum; how on earth can that single stroke of paint look like a duck (or boat or name whatever) from far away. It still delights me to deconstruct brushstrokes in a painting I am viewing.

All these smaller paintings are great adventures before I return to some larger compositions. But painting the lushness of life all around us is a pleasure I am grateful I can share.
